Oesophagus
What is it used for? 
The primary function of the Oesophagus is to transport food from the mouth to the stomach.

Where do you find it? 
The Oesophagus is a muscular tube connecting the throat with the stomach.

How does it work? 
As a person swallows, food moves from the mouth to the throat.

The Small Intestine

Small Intestine
What is it used for? 
The main function of the small intestine is absorption of nutrients and minerals from food. 

Where do you find it? 
The small intestine is a long, winding tube connected to the stomach on one end and the large intestine on the other.   

How does it work?  
The duodenum is the first part of the small intestine. The main role of the duodenum is to complete the first phase of digestion.

The Human Stomach

What is it used for? 
 The stomach receives food from the oesophagus. 

Where do you find it?  
The stomach is a muscular organ located on the left side of the upper abdomen. 

How does it work?
It takes in food from the oesophagus (food pipe)

What is it used for? 
The liver's main job is to filter the blood coming from the digestive tract, before passing it to the rest of the body. 
Where do you find it? 
The liver is a large, meaty organ that sits on the right side of the belly.

The Large Intestine

The Large Intestine 
What is it used for? 
The major function of the large intestine is to absorb water from the remaining indigestible food matter and transmit the useless waste material from the body. 
Where do you find it? 
The colon is also called the large intestine. The ileum (last part of the small intestine) connects to the cecum (first part of the colon) in the lower right abdomen. 
Weird example
The whale has the largest large intestine. That comes to more than 150m of intestine in the case of a large sperm whale and possibly as much as 220m for a blue whale.
